Flax seed packs a punch when incorporating it into everyday recipes you might already be making as part of your morning routine. While the seeds themselves are small, flax seeds are rich in fiber, contain omega-3 fatty acids, and provide a good source of protein.

They are also known to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure to promote an overall healthy diet and help with weight management, according to Healthline. Did we mention they taste good, too? Flax seed has a mild, nutty flavor –which makes it particularly easy to utilize them in a number of different breakfast recipes. Here are five flax seed recipes to try for breakfast.

Flax Seed Smoothie

If you’re a person who is always on the go, one easy way to make sure you’re starting the day with plenty of nutrients is to prepare a smoothie before you get out the door. Adding flax seeds to your favorite smoothie recipe will hardly change the taste, but will provide many benefits including getting a healthy serving of fiber into your system.

This flax seed smoothie recipe features frozen fruits like mango and banana (feel free to use whatever you have in your freezer) and a great big cup of spinach to mask your greens and fill your cup. A combination of water and orange juice also helps to create the right smoothie consistency and adds a bit of bonus flavor and vitamin C. While two tablespoons is the recommended amount to toss in the blender in this recipe, you might want to start with a smaller amount to see how your body handles the fiber first.

Acai Bowl with Flax Seed

Similar to a smoothie, an acai bowl uses a smoothie-like base for the breakfast recipe and is garnished with a whole host of toppings that add flavor and health benefits to the dish. You can purchase frozen acai base packs anywhere from Target, to Trader Joe’s to Walmart and then add your favorite frozen fruit and coconut water to create the perfect texture for your bowl.

Popular toppings for acai bowls range from fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, and bananas to other sweet treats like cacao nibs, honey, or granola. Other add-ons include bee pollen, coconut flakes, flax seeds, or chia seeds. The seeds in particular will add a little crunch to your dish and pack in more flavor along with all of those health benefits.

PS: For both smoothies and acai bowls, did you know frozen fruit is actually preferred over fresh fruit? While some people feel fresh fruit simply must be healthier, frozen fruit retains more of the benefits and nutrients during the flash freezing process, where fresh fruit can start to lose its luster on its way to you from its original farm. Additionally, frozen fruits help make your smoothie or acai bowl a rich, cold texture versus adding ice, which will water it down.

Peanut Butter Flax Toast

For this recipe, you’ll find it’s easy to enhance a childhood favorite –peanut butter toast –and include flax seeds for that little extra something on top. Many recipes recommend starting off with a grain bread like Ezekiel or any of the Dave’s Killer Bread products and then adding an all-natural peanut butter spread to create the toast. Peanut butter is a great source of protein and healthy fat, while bread provides the carbohydrates needed to start your day.

To incorporate flax seeds into a toast recipe, the best way is to ground them up and sprinkle them on top of the peanut butter (maybe add some banana slices and ground cinnamon on top, too). You can blend them up so that they are easier to eat in this style and save more to sprinkle for the next day.

Oatmeal with Flax Seeds

Oatmeal is making a comeback these days, especially when prepared in the “overnight oats” style where the breakfast is made the night before and refrigerated before eating. In this flaxseed oatmeal recipe, the oatmeal is prepared hot over the stove and the oats and flaxseed soften up and absorb water during the cooking process. If you’re hesitant about the taste or texture of flax seeds, this recipe will make it almost undetectable in the final product.

Top your oatmeal with fresh fruit like blueberries or raspberries and garnish it with a drizzle of honey, ground cinnamon or toasted nuts –and enjoy!

Blueberry Flax Muffins

Flax seeds can be baked into a number of different popular breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, or muffins. The flaxseed becomes part of a muffin mixture in this recipe with flour, flax meal, and other traditional baking ingredients. Healthy muffins are the perfect grab-and-go breakfast or an addition to a plate of eggs or a bowl of fruit to start your day feeling energized.

Yielding 12 muffins per recipe, you can use these to meal prep and pack your lunch for the week or even freeze the muffins and make a few batches in advance for when things get busy or you’re cooking breakfast for a large group. Adding blueberries gives these muffins a fresh flavor and taste that makes you almost forget how healthy they are….almost.
